A federal judge has blocked the Biden administration’s asylum policy for immigrants.

The Biden administration suffered a blow on Tuesday when a federal judge blocked a new rule that would have allowed immigration officials to deny asylum to immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border if they don’t first apply online or seek protection in a country they passed through.

U.S. District Judge Jon Tager of the Northern District of California stayed his ruling for 14 days to give the administration time to appeal.

The rule was enacted after the coronavirus-based restrictions known as Title 42 expired in May.
