Authorities say a 15-year-old Arizona high school football player was found dead in a lake.

A 15-year-old boy who starred for his high school football team outside Phoenix was found dead in a lake from where he disappeared, authorities said Tuesday.

According to the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office, Christopher Hampton’s body was recovered from Show Love Lake less than 24 hours after deputies responded to search for him. He played football at Cesar Chavez High School.

All three Navajo County search and rescue teams were called in for a search that ended in tragic news, officials said.

“We want to extend our condolences to his family and friends who are grieving this loss. This tragedy affects all of the communities we serve…” the district said. “Christopher was a friend, athlete and kind young man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.”

Hampton and the rest of the football team traveled to the lake Monday while participating in an athletic camp, the district said.

“During his time on the lake, a student-athlete went missing. Police were immediately contacted, who deployed a dive team, air support and boats to investigate a possible tragedy on the lake,” the district said.

The district added that it and the school will continue to cooperate fully with the investigation, which is ongoing.
