Connecticut woman’s 5-year-old daughter dies after being swept away by river

A woman and her 5-year-old daughter were swept into a Connecticut river and died, authorities said Wednesday.

State police identified the woman as Dora Kelly, 39, of Norwich, and her daughter Aralee McKeever were swimming in the Shattucket River near River Park in Sprague when they were caught in the current just before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, state police and fire officials said.

Both were pulled unconscious from the water and taken to Becks Hospital in Norwich. Kelly was pronounced dead there. McKeever was later transported to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford, where she died Wednesday, state police said.

Minnesota officials identify 3 people who drowned near the Mississippi River over the weekend.

State police said they do not suspect foul play and are treating the deaths as untimely.
