David Ortiz looked at his phone, his pursed lips Indicates nerves Rarely seen from one of the game’s great clutch hitters.

Pedro Martنیnez’s hand rested on Ortiz’s shoulder, and Mart اچھیnez smiled when the good news came. Former teammates hugged, and Martنیnez welcomed Ortiz to a rare place in baseball history.

Big Poppy is bound for Copperstown – and on the first ballot as well.

Ortiz was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first attempt on Tuesday, while steroid-tainted stars Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens were denied entry into their final year under consideration by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Was

Ortiz, who has been an All-Star 10 times with the Boston Red Sox for the most part in 20 seasons, was named on 77.9% of the belts, clearing the 75% limit required for insurance. He is the 58th player to be considered for the first time.

Ortiz said, “Dude, it’s a great honor to be on my first rodeo.

Big Poppy was one of the most recognizable faces in baseball in the 2000’s and 2010’s. Her big smile made her fans love her, but Dominican’s light frame frightened the pitcher, especially in the last innings. Three of the 23 game-ending hits of his career came during the post-Boston drought season of 2004, when the Red Sox defeated rivals the Yankees and then won their first World Series in 86 years.

She is the fourth Hall of Famer to be born in the Dominican Republic, joined by Juan Marichel, Martinez and Vladimir Guerrero.

“I can imagine how New England would feel if one of their children were inducted into the Hall of Fame today,” Ortiz said. “I won’t even tell you about the Dominican Republic.”

The left-handed hitter was signed by Seattle as a teenager and traded to Minnesota as a minor. He made his major league debut with the Twins in 1997, but hardly looked like a future Hall of Fame. He was released in 2002, signed a free agent contract with Boston and slashed 31 homes the following season.

Ortiz said he joined the Red Sox to find out what made stars like Martinez, Minnie Ramirez and Nomar Garciapara great. Martinez helped pave the way, urging first-year general manager Theo Epstein to sign a 6-foot-3 slugger.

“Once I found it, it was going to wrap up,” Ortiz said. “That team was surrounded by a lot of superstars, and I went there like a sponge ready to learn.”

Martنیnez became a patron of his countrymen. Now, he shares the honor of being the first to add a ballot.

“I am so proud to be your partner, to be your brother, to be with you when you need me,” Martinez said. “I am just happy to have you in my life.

“Well deserved,” he added. “Welcome to Cooperstown.”

Ortiz batted .286 with 541 home runs against Boston and Minnesota while presenting 88% of his plate as a designated hitter, the highest in the hall. He passes Edgar Martینnez, who had DH for 71.7% on his plate.

Ortiz also has performance-enhancing drugs, but many voters chose to ignore a positive test that came out during a survey test in 2003 that was supposed to be anonymous. Ortiz has denied using steroids, and Commissioner Rob Manfred said in 2016 that “I think it would be wrong” to remove him from the Hall of Fame on the basis of this single test.

“I’ve never failed an exam, so what does that tell you?” Ortiz said.

The Ortiz will be held July 24 in Cooperstown, New York with the Era Committee Selection Book O’Neill, Minnie Minoso, Gil Hodges, Tony Olivea, Jim Kate and Bud Fowler.

Bonds, Clemens and Kurt Schilling were all rejected in their 10th and final year on the BBWAA ballot. Bonds is the league’s career home run leader and Clemens has won a record seven Psy Young Awards, but voters denied him the game’s highest honor on suspicion of using PED. Bonds received 66% of the vote, and Clemens received 65.2%.

“My family and I put HOF in the rearview mirror ten years ago,” he said. Clemens said on Twitter. “Hopefully now everyone can close this book and keep their eyes on what really matters in life.”

After a staggering 16 votes in 2021, support for Schilling fell sharply. Many voters chose not to support the right-wing because of hateful remarks made in retirement about Muslims, transgender people, journalists and others.

Schilling asked Hall to remove him from this year’s vote, but that remained an option. His name was on 58.6% of the ballots, down from 71.1% last year.

“I say this every year and especially this year, focus on who entered.” Schilling tweeted. “avdavidortiz deserves 1st ballot! Congratulations my friend you got it! #bigpapiHoF”

Bonds, clemences and shillings are made on the BBWAA ballot, but they will be reconsidered by next year’s Game Era Committee next year. A 16-member committee of Hall members, executives and experienced media members will convene in December to consider players who played between 1988-2016 and are no longer eligible for BBWAA selection.

“It’s hard for me to believe that Bonds and Clemens aren’t with me,” Ortiz said of Bonds and Clemens. “They did it all.”

Alex Rodriguez and Jimmy Rollins received the most support among first-time voters.

Rodriguez won three MVPs and hit 696 homers, the fourth-highest ever, but his use of PED has also clouded his case. He was banned by Major League Baseball for the entire 2014 season for violating the league’s drug policy. Voters nominated him on 34.3% of the ballots.

Rollins, a four-time Gold Glow winner with Philadelphia, appeared on the 9.4% ballot and was the only second first-timer to earn the required 5% to be considered. Joe Nathan, Tim Linskam and Ryan Howard were among the 10 One and Dawn players.

Only second baseman Scott Rollins (63.2%, more than 52.9%), first baseman Todd Hilton (above 52%, 44.9%) and reliever Billy Wagner (51%, 46.4%) were the only other people to get more than 50% support. Were above). ). Outfielder Andrew Jones also benefited, rising from 33.9% to 41.1%.

With Carlos Beltran joining the list, next year’s ballot will introduce a new wave of controversy. The nine-time All-Star was convicted by the MLB before the 2020 season and was fired as manager of the New York Mets for his role in the Houston Astros signing scandal.

Beltran is expected to be joined by John Leakey, Jared Weaver, Jacob Elsbury and Jason Worth.
