Florida’s Matt Gaetz to introduce bill to defund investigation into Trump target Jack Smith: ‘We must act’

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla. announced Tuesday that he would introduce legislation in the House of Representatives to “defend” special counsel Jack Smith’s grand jury investigation into the Jan. 6 Capitol riots and efforts to sway the 2020 presidential election.

“I will introduce legislation against President Trump to defend the Jack Smith witch hunt,” Gaetz wrote on Twitter, hours after former President Donald Trump confirmed on social media that he had been informed he was a target in the investigation and expected to face arrest and indictment.

“They are currently attacking our democracy and engaging in election meddling. The United States Congress has the power to stop election meddling, and we must act immediately!” Getz added.

In a video he added to his post, Gaetz argued that Trump would not face a possible third impeachment if he were not a leading contender for president.

He also criticized the DOJ’s “lack of transparency” about who is involved in the investigation, citing concerns about a “team of evil Democrats” who launched Mueller’s probe into alleged collusion between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia.

The DOJ did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Gaetz’s bill comes after Trump pleaded not guilty last month to 37 federal charges stemming from an investigation into Smith’s alleged improper handling of classified records at Mar-a-Lago.

The charges include knowingly withholding national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice and making false statements. The indictment marks the first time in US history that a former president has faced federal criminal charges.
