A suitcase has been discovered in a field in Texas that police believe to be human remains.
Police say the gruesome discovery was made Thursday morning by herders at a ranch near San Antonio in Bexar County.
“They began investigating and found what appeared to be human remains,” Sheriff Javier Salazar said at a press conference.
“At this point, we don’t know anything about the gender of the remains or how long the remains have been here,” he added.
Sheriff Salazar said the remains were “partial” and police “will not be able to determine the cause of death or identity for some time.”
However, he said his first “inclination” was “murder.”
“It is too early to say whether the person was killed here or was brought here in this piece of equipment and dumped here,” he added.
Sheriff Salazar said equipment was left in the open and burn marks were found in the area.
However, he said the police were yet to know whether it was an attempt to cremate the body or whether it was related to people burning garbage.

“There really wasn’t a lot of effort to hide the body, except that it was inside the suitcase,” he added.
Sheriff Salazar said the owners of the ranch were out of town but were “cooperating” with the investigation.
“At this point I can’t say whether or not they are related to what they found, but they are cooperating,” he said.
