Kamala Harris Slams ‘Extremists’ Over New Florida Curriculum That Suggests Some Profits From Slavery US News

Kamala Harris said “extremists” want to “replace history with lies” after Florida’s education standards changed the way slavery is taught in schools.

gave Vice President traveled to Jacksonville on Friday to decry new guidelines approved by the state Board of Education this week, which he said include instructions for middle school students that some enslaved people benefited from the skills they learned.

“They dare to spread propaganda to our children. This is the United States of America. We should not do that,” he said.

“Adults know what slavery really involves. It involves rape. It involves torture. It involves taking children from their mothers. It involves some of the worst examples of dehumanization in our world.”

“How is it that in the midst of these atrocities anyone can suggest that there is any merit in being subjected to this level of inhumanity?”

While he did not mention the Republican presidential candidate. of Florida Governor, Ron DeSantisby name, he referred to “extremist, so-called leaders”.

Mr. DeSantis, who has Fought the Walt Disney Company. Criticizing a law in his state banning discussion of sexuality and gender in the classroom, he said the new curriculum was needed to curb liberal bias and accused Ms. Harris of trying to “demagogue” and politicize history.

He said he was not involved in setting the Board of Education’s standards, but he defended the parts that benefited enslaved people.

But he added: “I think – I think what they’re doing, I think they’re probably going to show some people who eventually, you know, being a blacksmith, to do things later in life.”

He continued: “It was the scholars who put it together. It was nothing that was done politically.”

In a statement, the governor also said: “Democrats like Kamala Harris have to lie about Florida’s education standards to cover their agenda of encouraging students and pushing sexual topics on children.

“Florida stands in their way and we will continue to expose their agenda and their lies.”

Ms. Harris, the first black person to serve as vice president, spoke at the Ritz Theater and Museum in Jacksonville’s historically African-American neighborhood.

He described “true patriotism” as “fighting for a nation that is better for every generation to come” and said schools would better prepare students for the world if they did not dwell on historical crimes.

“We must not be seduced into believing that we will be better off if we forget,” he said.

“If we remember, we will be better. If we remember, we will be stronger.”
