It was originally expected that the College Football Playoff would not expand to 12 teams until 2026, but that will happen much sooner.
According to multiple reports, the Rose Bowl has amended its current contract, paving the way for a 12-team playoff beginning in the 2024 season.
An extension to 2024 was originally thought to be an outside possibility, but the new Rose Bowl deal has made it a reality.
The committee agreed to a 12-team playoff in September – it has been a four-team playoff since its inception in 2014.

The 12 teams will consist of six top-ranked conference champions and six at-large teams, as in other NCAA tournaments.
In last year’s proposition, the four highest-ranked conference champions received first-round byes, and the remaining eight teams will play in the first round at the home fields of the higher seeds. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be hosted by existing bowl games. Since the CFP’s inception, New Year’s Six has rolled around as semi-final games.

The CFP’s current top four are Georgia, Michigan, TCU, and USC. If all four teams win their respective conference title games this weekend, it will likely be a playoff.
