A Texas teacher and two aides allegedly isolated a 5-year-old boy with special needs for so long that he began eating his own waste after being deprived of food.
Melody Lapointe, 47, and teaching assistants Tarah Tinney, 33, and Augusta Costello, 27, were charged earlier this week with abandoning or endangering a child in the April 2021 incident.
The three are accused of putting the boy in an isolation room inside the Liberty Independent School District facility, ABC 13 reported.
A Texas DPS trooper was hospitalized after being exposed to fentanyl during a traffic stop, authorities say.
They allegedly deprived him of food, and forced him to eat his own feces and urine, authorities said.
Tinney and Costello have resigned, and LaPointe, the lead classroom teacher, works for another school district, which also placed her on leave, the report said.
Upon receiving a report of the incident, Liberty ISD contacted authorities.
“We immediately reported the matter to law enforcement and CPS (Child Protective Services), removed the teachers who continued to work for us, and conducted a thorough investigation,” a district spokesperson said. A district spokesperson said.
“Based on our investigation, we reported the teachers to the State Board for Educator Certification and shared our findings with law enforcement authorities,” the spokesperson added.
